Going Offline

Posted by: | Comments

I’ve been doing quite a lot of offline work in the past year and I thought I’d write a post here to talk about that process.

As a regular attendee of other peoples’ events, I’ve learned a lot of nice marketing tricks which I’ll share here … and basically give you a ‘kit of parts’ to get your own offline events started.

I don’t claim this as the ‘definitive’ way to hold an offline event … but it should get you going I hope :-)

Venue

I use a virtual office for my business … which basically means that I pay a monthly fee to register my business address, get my phones answered, receive my post … and get office access if I need it.

So I use my virtual office for my offline events … that way I get use of office space, without the ongoing costs and commitment … it’s ‘pay as you go’ offices basically!

So do a search for ‘virtual office’ + your location and see what comes up.

In my home area of Carlisle I get these results:

Bourne House here

Freerange here

Warwick Mill here

3rd Party Promotion

I tested 3 channels for promotion and interestingly, the cheapest was the best!

I advertised in these places:

1) The local newspaper (very expensive, brought in no paying customers)

2) A local, web based news service (cheap, isn’t established enough to bring in any decent web traffic yet)

3) Local business fan page & website here (ridiculously cheap, filled the room for me!)

4) LinkedIn … believe it or not, in my rural county there are not a whole load of people using LinkedIn actively.

I found it very good for driving traffic, visibility and interest but it didn’t bring me any paying customers.

My promotion

I have built my own website for ongoing promotion, search engine positioning and leads capture.

Whenever I set a training date, I change the video and sales page with a customised, date-based version.

I was intending to use Paypal for payments at first, but I opted for EventBrite which I loved for ticket and attendee management.

My EventBrite page is here

EventBrite does take a small fee, but it allows you to set up ‘early bird’ ticketing at a lower price, it lets you enlist affiliates and gives you a lot of scope when it comes to creating a sales page and incorporating a video.

In short, I love it and highly recommend it for offline events, even if they’re free.

Equipment

When you book a venue make sure that you have access to a projector that works with your laptop and – most importantly – a remote control unit so that you can flick through the slides without being bound to your PC.

If you’re chained to your PC you’re not going to be able to move around much – and that’s going to make like a bit dull!

I bought my own and carry it round with when I do talks as there’s nothing worse that being stuck having to manually change slides!

Ensure too that you have a flip chart or white board.

I would also say that a wireless connection is a ‘must’ these days … and make sure that the wireless password is easily available via the white board when attendees arrive.

Niceties

Make sure you plan very regular breaks – keep attendees fresh, leave plenty of breathing room for networking, chatting, comfort and cigarette breaks.

Here’s how I set out my days, note how regularly we break: http://www.cumbriafanpages.com/training/

Make sure that you ask attendees if they have special dietary requirements before they turn up on the day.

Most catering companies will provide a vegetarian option, I found that a Vegan option was much more tricky to accommodate.

A nice touch that I learned from a Jo Barnes event is to put different ‘treats’ on the tables during breaks … sweets (not always hard boiled), fruit, chews.

The constant change and ‘surprise’ really keeps attendees fresh … it’s funny how the ‘little things’ make such a big difference.

Have pens and paper available for anybody who forgot to bring some … and I always provide name badges and company/business info for attendees so that they don’t have to struggle to remember names.

Marketing

As internet marketers, we need to know how to leverage our time and resources.

I purchased a pull up banner for use at my events, and as attendees arrived, we had a photograph taken together in front on my branding, and these were placed on Facebook for ‘social proof’ and awareness building.

We video recorded the entire event for future use as a physical DVD, audio product or membership bonus.

Finally, we recorded testimonials for social proof and future marketing here

Summary

I’m currently experimenting with my offline marketing to see if I can create systems which work for me like my online activities do.

So at a local level, I’m trying to create brand awareness and a flow of traffic into my auto responder so that I can host and record these local events whenever I want to.

I’ve found it much harder than working only online – certainly when getting started – but now I have social proof, images and local endorsement, life is much easier.

Why You Need To Get Out More!

Posted by: | Comments

One of the most effective things I have done to boost my progress and personal relationships in internet marketing has been to attend live events.

This takes the form of workshops, seminars, exhibitions and mastermind groups, and as you can see from the picture below, I’ve gathered quire a few name tags in the past 12 months …

Conference badges 2011

The first live event I attended was one Lee McIntyre’s live, 2-day events in Newcastle in February 2010.

You know, I nearly didn’t go … but I realised straight rom the start of that event that it was something I needed to repeat.

I met so many marketers that weekend, many of whom I went on to work with, running webinars, giveaways or other events, and now they form my growing network of internet marketing contacts.

So why am I telling you all this?

Well, the reason for writing this post is to encourage you to get out more … to attend workshops, conferences and seminars and grow your contacts in the business.

It’s a small world in internet marketing, and the more people who get to know you, the better the knowledge and support network that you’ll build.

And it’s a lot more fun that doing it all alone!

I was bitten by the bug at Lee’s event in 2010 and in 2011 I have attended a great variety of live events.

Here’s a taster of where I’ve been and how it helped my business …

My 2011 world tour (okay, it was just the UK!)

January 28/29/30 2011 – Ultimate Facebook Marketing Seminar

A Mark Anastasi event, not only did I meet lots of marketing friends, I finally got to meet Steven Essa who I’d been emailing and chatting to on Skype previously, and made plans with Chris Freville, who I’d just launched Auto Cash Funnel with in December.

I was there primarily to gather as much Facebook related information as I could in preparation for my Fast Fan Pages launch which was scheduled for later that year.

March 12/13/14 2011 – The Greatest Facebook Show On Earth

I went here primarily to meet Jo Barnes and Chris Farrell – which I did – but I also met an amazing group of people at this event, many of whom went on to be friends and customers for my Fast Fan Pages software.

I also added to my Facebook learning in preparation for my Fast Fan Pages launch and got a great feel for who my potential customers would be and what they needed from my fan page service.

March-September 2011 – Daniel Wagner & James Watson Mastermind Group

This one involved travel to London once a month and I met a remarkable group of people many of whom I would now class as friends.

This was an excellent, supportive group – I learned so much from the entire experience – and although I left in September I keep in regular contact with many of the members and continue to work with them.

25th March/1st June/16th June/11th November – Social Media Presentations in partnership with regional newspaper group

I’ve done 4 presentations this year to groups of 50-100 local business people (plus one to a group of journalists) on using Facebook for business.

In each case I’ve made excellent local contacts and got a feel for the concerns and issues facing local businesses in social media – as well as promoting my Fast Fan Pages software.

4th June 2011 – Ministry Of Traffic Live

This event was hosted by a mastermind group friend called Phill Turner and I was supposed to attending as a guest.

As it turned out, the main speaker cancelled and guess who got shipped in at he last moment to replace him?

This was my first event speaking toa group of internet marketers, so I was incredibly surprised – and flattered – when I was voted ‘best speaker’ by the audience.

What is it they say about facing your fears?

On this occasion, I’m pleased that I did :-)

 21st September 2011 – Ad Tech Exhibition

This was a fascinating experience and as well as meeting with my mastermind group at this event, I also met a very well established internet marketer here for a business discussion, left with lots of useful contacts and information … and may well even exhibit there myself in 2012!

19th October 2011 – A4UExpo

I went to this exhibition specifically to source software based affiliate partners for a launch I’m working towards in early 2012.

I made two brilliant contacts here, one of which was actually interested in using my software, and I also attended a meal and meeting with Clickbank representatives and many of the UK’s top internet marketers whilst in London.

So, do you need to get out more?

As you can see, it’s been a busy old year and me and the train from Carlisle to London know each other very well now!

And I’ve missed out lots of 1-to-1 meetings and small meetings with other marketers … this is  just a selection from a list of ‘public’events.

But as you can see, although much of my work as an internet marketer is done at my desk, in isolation, I highly value those face-to-face meetings and they’ve been an essential part of my business building and strategy in 2011.

So, what events have you attended in 2011 and how have they helped to move your business forward?

Please leave a comment below.

Start 2012 with your first great event!

My friend Phill Turner is holding an event in London in mid-January and if you want and information-packed, pitch-free seminar and a place where you can meet like-minded internet marketers, I can’t recommend Phill highly enough.

This is a great opportunity to start as you mean to go on in 2012 – getting out and about and making contact with people whowill become your friends, possibly business partners and maybe even customers.

Check out details of Phill’s event here

So, what do you think?

As internet marketers, we all know the problems of being distracted … by emails, Facebook, the children, our partner, the phone, the TV, the pantry … you name it, all these things are there to test our resolve!

So I thought I’d put together this short video showing you 5 of the online tools that I use to manage my time better … and they’re all cost free :-)

I’m sure you’ll find something in here that you didn’t know about already and by saving you valuable time, you’ll be able to go on and make more money online.

By the way, this is the first video I’ve made using Easy Video Player 2.0 … rather than send out a sales pitch, I thought I’d make a video and show you exactly how it works.

You can view an alternative version – which EVP 2.0 generates automatically for me – here … it’s just one of the new features in the software meaning you don’t need to know about HTML.

GravatarWant to know how I – and other people – get their images to display automatically in their blog posts?

It took me ages to work this out … so I’ll share it here.

I was trying to figure out how some people automatically get their photo posted on WordPress comments and I couldn’t do it.

All I could see was the blue ‘G’ logo that you can see on the left.

The answer is they use a Gravatar: http://en.gravatar.com/

Basically, you upload a photo to Gravatar which you link with different social media accounts and your own email addresses.

When you register on a site that uses the Gravatar, it will automatically pull your image in.

It works across multiple social networking sites and fully automates the ‘adding your picture’ process.

You can also link it in with multiple email addresses so that whenever you sign up to a Gravatar enabled site with one of those emails, your image will display automatically.

If you’re running an internet business, it makes much more sense to let people see a face shot of you, as it helps to build rapport and relationships.

It took me about 10 minutes to set up once I’d worked out how to do it.

What about you? What do you think?
