How to install WordPress plugins

By

My previous post on 5 Essential WordPress Plugins has proved so popular that I’ve decided to record a video version showing you exactly how to locate and install those plugins.

The video below shows you how to install Akismet, All-In-One SEO, Google XML Sitemap, Comment Luv and Sexy Bookmarks.

Agree or disagree?

  3. Hey Paul, it’s a good video guide. I did have all 5 plugins installed until I checked out the page load speed of my blog. See http://nine95.com/is-your-blog-bogged/.

Check it out for your own site if you’re interested. I was really surprised to see that the SexyBookmarks plugin includes an image that is a whopping 200+ kilobytes in size. My entire home page (everything including images, CSS, HTML, Javascript) is currently 209 kilobytes so the SB plugin was doubling the size of the files that each visitor had to load in order to see my home page properly. It added significantly to page load times and I strongly suggest you read my post (see above link) and make your own assessment.

Everyone is, of course, free to install any plugin that suits their site, but be aware that some come with components that can severely affect page load speed and search engines are beginning to take more notice of that metric.

    Cheers, Michael

This is a really interesting comment Michael and you know what, it’s actually years since I heard any discussion of page weight and loading times.

When I started professionally on the web and we were all stuck with dial up connections, we had to take great care with loading issues.

Images had to be reduced in size significantly and video was a big issue too, we’d use Realplayer for this.

Since we got decent broadband speeds, you hear very little discussion of these matters, but you’re absolutely right, page loading speeds are a big accessibility issue.

I tried that testing service that you recommend on your blog post and it came back with some fascinating data as you say … I’ll be monitoring this info closely in future.

You make an excellent point here and I’ll keep that web tool handy for future use.

    All the best, Paul
