A picture paints a thousand words … finding images for your website

One of the problems I’ve come up against whilst putting together my sites is that of obtaining decent pictures where I don’t have anything suitable in my own collection.

It’s important that any images used are copyright free – or carry the rights on purchase to use on your website.

I’ve come across a few decent URLs on my travels, some of them free and some of them with fees, and I’ve written notes below each to give an indication as to ease of use, price, quality and range of pictures and so on.

freeimages.co.uk

Offers 2500 free stock photos

Require a simple acknowledgement link to use on your website.

Very good site for general images which aren’t too obscure, but a bit limited overall.

Conclusion: Worth a look before you part with any cash on other sites.

dreamstime.com

A great and varied collection of photos with differing levels of copyright restrictions.

Easy to use and free to register.

Limitations and conditions are a bit confusing … you’ll need to concentrate when you read them!

Many varied price packages, from a few dollars for a few pictures to a very expensive subscription.

Royalty Free Images

Payment by credit card or Paypal.

Free images are available for download and there’s a good collection to choose from.

Conclusion: One of my favourites!

alamy.com

Over 12 million images.

Royalty free and traditional licensing options.

Pricey!

Not particularly intuitive navigation.

Conclusion – take a look when you’ve made your first £100k, but probably not before then.

photos.com

Only works by subscription, with 1 month starting at $99.95.

Offers 360,000 professional quality stock photos.

Vast range of themes and categories.

One-off purchases possible … but at a very high price.

Conclusion – site is fine, but with subscription-only, not a site for the new business or novice.

budgetstockphoto.com

Low-cost, stock images supplied on CD.

CDs cost around £30 each, and have over 1000 stock photos.

Free samples are available for download.

Images supplied on a royalty free basis.

Conclusion: Great selection of useful images, but who wants to pay for stuff they won’t use? Better if you could download and pay for individual images.
