Making a website … something for nothing!

By

Usually free web hosting comes with adverts over which you have no control.

When I first got into building my own sites 6 years ago, I went for free web hosting packages like Bravenet and Netfirms.

They’re both perfectly good services and Bravenet offers lots of great free add-ons like guestbooks and password protected pages which I just wouldn’t have been able to do myself at that stage in my website building career.

However, it’s not long before you get fed up with having someone else’s ads on your website and pop-ups in particular drove me mad.

Forced to pay

So you start looking for paid hosting … cheap paid hosting … and it was then that I moved on to GoDaddy (which I don’t like – the interface is too cluttered for my tastes and I didn’t find it intuitive) and T35 which my colleagues at work introduced me to.

I was very happy with T35 until I started building my 10 websites, and at that stage I needed to move into a multi-domain hosting service, which is when I made the switch to nativespace.co.uk.

However, a new site has come along which finally gets away from the advert problems associated with free hosting … it’s called 110mb.com.

Too good to be true?

The blurb says …

Here’s your chance to create and grow your website on one of the most endorsed free website hosting providers online — that’ll never show a single ad on your website!

It really does appear to be that good … and they go to great lengths to establish their credentials.

The disc space and monthly bandwidth are impressive, you get a site builder and unlimited MySQL Databases with a ‘Free Account with Upgrades’, so for starter sites, or site building it would appear to be worth a try.

Signing on the dotted line

I went to create my account today and got an error message, but I have a friend who’s signed up already and says that although it’s a bit cumbersome, it does seem worth a try.

He also warned me that during the signup process, you’re warned off putting anything too substantial on the service, so popular Open Source applications like Mambo and Joomla would appear to be out.

When 110mb.com lets me log in, I’ll give it a try and see what I think.

I probably won’t use it now as I’ve got unlimited domain hosting on my current package, but I certainly would have given this an outing when working on fewer sites and you may find it a brilliant (and free!) nursery area for any new sites that you’re working on.

Site Build It!
